Before setting up a website you need to register a domain name. Domain name is the name for the ip address of the website which can be more easily remembered. It is typical to include the keyword for the niche around which the website is built in the domain name. When you register a domain you need to take care of a few things.
You need to decide whether you would register a domain as a public registration or a private registration. Every registrar is required by ICANN (the international governing body for domain name registration) to maintain a publicly-accessible “WHOIS” database displaying all contact information for all domain names registered. This information must be accurate, or the domain name is subject to deletion by ICANN. This makes your private contact information publicly-accessible. Spammers may become a nuisance if they get access to your email id.
When you register a domain name with the option for private registration it involves extra cost but blocks spam. It will however not block all spam, and you may take call as to whether you would like to put in that extra amount for greater privacy or not.
Always keep your domain record locked. When your domain record is locked, it means that your domain name is locked and can’t be transferred until you manually unlock it. A lock keeps any transfer from taking place. You need to unlock the domain before you try to transfer it.
When you register a domain name it is important to check with the registrar that the domain name is safely locked or not and ensure you are not charged for this service.
It is Advisable to keep domain names short. Two to three short words with no numbers and which include the keywords for you website’s niche is recommended.
All domain names have a top level domain name - ex .com, .biz, .org.,net. It is better to choose a .com top level domain name when you register a domain. The period for which you register a domain (typical period is one year) could have a bearing on the cost. Longer registrations generally have discounts.
